Rose O'Neill wasn't your average turn-of-the-century artist. Forget stuffy salons and proper portraits. This self-taught firecracker from Nebraska barged into the male-dominated world of illustration, becoming the first published female cartoonist in the US.

Rose was a suffragette. She was married and divorced twice. She hosted events for celebrated authors, artists, and poets of the day, including James Montgomery Flagg, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Khalil Gibran, and Booth Tarkington before settling
down in the Ozarks region of Missouri.

Rose left a legacy that's as whimsical as it is inspiring.
